On November 16, 2014 more than three thousand souls braved a fifteen kilometer run at the Universal Studios back lot.
In the start line for the race you could feel electricity in the air. All of this was familiar territory for me, I've been doing SRLA since eighth grade and am currently a senior at Venice High School. Even though I have done all this before, the wait to start was driving me crazy with excitement! I felt like a formula one car engine in neutral, just waiting for the opportunity to push myself to a new personal best. As the horn sounded I felt like I was pushed into gear and started walking to the start line. As I crosses the line I started doing what I know best, run!
For the first half mile or so, the crowd and slightly narrow streets proved yet another challenge to endure, however quickly lapsed as the runners spread out thus giving us an incredibly cool experience seeing some amazing buildings that were in movies and television shows. The hills proved a good challenge as well.
From then on, I was able to run at my own pace, and I felt just like a formula one car in the middle of the race. As I crossed the finish line, I felt a huge sense of satisfaction wash over me knowing that I beat my best time for a nine mile run. This satisfaction made the tight course worth it and I cannot wait until the half marathon in December.

Senior at Venice High School
My name is Jailan, and this is my first year of SRLA at Venice High
School. SRLA has been a very fundamental activity for me. I like the
idea that I am doing something that most people cannot say they have
done. Everyone in my group gets along and our group coordinators believe
in us. SRLA has been a great experience so far in my short months of
being a member. In many ways SRLA has benefited my life.
One
way SRLA has benefited my life is in a way that I feel more active and I
do not get as tired when I do certain activities. I actually feel a
difference in how my body feels. Last year, I did no physical activity
besides the required physical education class. I could not even run a
mile. This has been a great accomplishment for myself, because it feels
good when you notice your improvement.
Today, November
16, 2014, I ran a 15K (9 mile) run. I really enjoyed the scenery and I
liked the challenge of the hilly course. The scenery really helps to
take your mind off of the fact that you are running. I feel like this
course will help me for future courses. SRLA is a great organization
that I really enjoy and I believe that everyone could benefit from it.

Today was the day of the Halloween run for SRLA! We have been training for months, and we have
collected a lot of bottles for SRLA
Cares.
We got to school
early in the morning, when it was still cold and dark. Everyone was waiting outside for the bus to
arrive, and we were very excited for it to come.
We picked up kids from a high school, and we saw Angel! He was on our team last year, but is now in 9th
grade. He is learning to play the viola!
When we got to the
race, we got out of the bus and went to warm up. We waited in line for the bathrooms for a very very long time. Then we warmed up and went to line up for the
race. Some teams do better stretches
than us, and our coaches told us we could learn them for next time.
Today is my first race, and so I was very surprised to see
how many people were there. We turned
the corner, and all I could see was so many people. I could also see a very big hill! That is where we ran when we started the
race.
After we ran up the big hill, we ran past houses and people
cheering for us! There are some houses
dressed up like haunted houses. Those
were cool.
When we got to the finish line, we ran around again. We did not
want to get disqualified for only running 5 Ks.
When we got to the end, everyone cheered for us! We got a really cool medal, and a purple
t-shirt. We can wear them to school
tomorrow instead of uniform!!
Then we got on the bus
to go home. That was fun, too. We ran 6.2 miles today, and we spent time
with our friends and donated bottles and had fun!
Today was a really fun race.
I am excited to run the next one at Universal Studios!!
